k170718 Ladysmith - Boom Boats and Boat Wrecks

I launched at Ladysmith boat ramp yesterday (2017-07-18), and kayaked past some sawmills and then over to Woods Islands. Suffice to say, it's obvious that Ladysmith harbour is very much a working harbour. The activity around the sawmills makes for an interesting, but not very peaceful, paddle.

This trip (see last picture) was characterized by log booms and all the activity that comes with booming. If there's one image that stands out for this paddle, it's "boom boats".

I'd done a similar trip quite a few years ago, but I didn't recall as many booms and as much booming activity at that time.

My launch. Boat ramp in Ladysmith...

Shortly after I'd launched...

Boom boat leaning into the logs...

Boom boat working at the Ladysmith sawmill...

Sawmill in Ladysmith...

Boom boat. Different colour; different company...

Conveyor and chute for sawdust...

Marina in Ladysmith...

Tug working the log booms along the shore of Woods Island...

This gap was barely deep enough for me to squeeze through; my rudder hit bottom several times. It must be said, it was a very low tide...

Boom boats working the passage behind Woods Island...

Classic sandstone "art"...

Paddling through a calm passage between islands...

49th Parallel...

Many boat wrecks in this area known as "Dogpatch"...

My route...
